The current Director is retiring after fifteen years of loyal and loving service to the students of this exceptional school. The Director is responsible for the daily operations of the school. Such operations include overseeing academics, student activities, financial management, admissions, and friend and fund-raising, employing and evaluating personnel, and maintaining a positive relationship with the school’s community and the community at large. The Director should have an outgoing personality that brings warmth, understanding, and comfort to students, faculty, staff, and parents. Also desired is a Director who will represent Scenic Land School as a positive spokesperson in the Chattanooga community. Scenic Land School is a State of Tennessee approved school. The successful candidate should have a valid Tennessee teaching license or a teaching license from another state recognized by the Tennessee Department of Education and/or master’s degree with endorsements in administration and supervision, supervisor of instruction, or principal. The Tennessee Department of Education allows three years for an administrator to complete these requirements. The Department will also allow the Director to establish and implement an annual plan for personal professional development to meet these requirements. Brief History and Profile of the School Scenic Land School was founded in 1966 by a group of interested Chattanooga citizens. It operated in the buildings of Rivermont Presbyterian Church for 32 years. It then moved to property on Mountain Creek Road and operated there until the summer of 2006, when it moved to its present location at 1200 Mountain Creek Road, Suite 300, in the Four Square Business Center. The school offers a unique education focused on personalized instruction and guidance of students with learning differences. It offers an environment in which all students have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. The words of a former student state the essence of the school best: “When I first came, I could not spell, I could not read, nor could I write. I couldn’t print letters small enough to fit my name on a page. It was impossible for me to function in a regular school. I leave Scenic Land with the ability to do all of those. This is an oasis. Here I found a place to rest and water the learning needs that were keeping me from growing. Here I found friendships, and it was here that I found teachers who fed my curiosity and found ways to for me to learn differently. Here I was finally safe.” The school is small in size. It usually enrolls 25 to 30 students in grades K-8. It offers a classroom teacher/pupil ratio of 1 to 8 or less. Revenues from tuition and fees do not cover the cost of educating these students, who have special needs. The limited size of the school and its individualized instruction necessitate supplementing revenues by raising funds from generous donors who believe that it is essential for a school like Scenic Land to have a presence in the Chattanooga area. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees that is excited about the future of the school. The school recently received a major challenge gift that has re-energized the entire Scenic Land community, which welcomes the opportunity to expand and to improve the special program it provides to deserving students. Applicants are requested to email a one-page cover letter stating why they are interested in this position and what strengths they would bring to the school, a resume, and two recent letters of reference to jackstanford@comcast.net or call 423-309-7862 for additional information.
