Financial
Aid
What
is Financial Aid?
Financial
aid is a monetory assistance Scenic Land School provides to reduce educational
costs to families. It most often comes in the form of outright grants
to families that demonstrate financial need. Need is generally defined
as the difference between eductional expense and a family’s ability
to pay these expenses. While we wish we could give all families assistance
with their child’s education, there is insifficient funds to allow
this option. We must evaluate the needs of each family that applies and
distribute the available financial aid.
Scenic
Land School is making available two new programs to assist families in
financial need. The first is the Deferred Tuitiol Loan Program where a
portion of the tuition is provided by a loan which will be paid back after
the student leaves Scenic Land School. The second is the Work Scholarship
Program which allows parents to receive a credit to their tuition account
by performing work at the school. Please read on for more details.
Financial
Aid
Scenic Land School provides financial assistance to ensure that the students
being admitted have a realistic chance to enroll, regardless of their financial
circumstances.
The Financial Aid process begins by parents completing the “Parents
Financial Statement” and submitting it for processing. Analysis
of the information estimates the family’s ability to pay towards
schooling.
The amount of aid offered depends on the family’s financial circumstances,
the school’s available financial aid funds, and the school’s
policies. (Remember, applying for financial aid does not guarantee
eligibility.)
If the amount of financial aid awarded, along with the amount parents
can pay, is not sufficient to cover tuition, Scenic Land School offers
additional options:
• Deferred Tuition Loan Program
• Work Scholarship Program
A combination of all these options may be offered to parents.
Each year the financial information will be reevaluated to determine
if financial aid (and/or the other options) will be continued or the
amounts changed.
Deferred
Tuition Loan Program
The purpose of this program is to establish a revolving tuition loan
fund that allows parents to defer repayment until after the student leaves
Scenic Land School. The families of many youngsters who need the services
of Scenic Land School to become successful in school are unable to manage
the cost, even when the school awards maximum financial aid. The revolving
tuition loan fund permits families to borrow at low interest the difference
between the amount they can afford to pay and the amount remaining to be
paid after financial aid is subtracted from the full tuition. The revolving
tuition loan fund will be repaid with interest and will permit other youngsters
to benefit from the same dollars repeatedly in the future.
Upon signing/approval of the agreement, the amount granted will be applied
to the account of the student for the current school year. At the end of
the school year the interest for that amount becomes due. If the student
remains at Scenic Land School, and another agreement is made, the deferred
tuition will continue with the new amount added, and the cycle repeats itself
until the student transitions from Scenic Land School. When the student
leaves, and the current interest has been paid, the principal will begin
to be paid. The total amount of the deferred tuition loan will be paid over
the following years equivalent to the number of years the loan was used.
During this period of time, no interest will be assessed.
Example: A student was with Scenic Land School for three years and was
awarded a deferred tuition loan for $2,000 the first year, $3,000 the second
year, and $4,000 the third year for a total of $9,000. The loan was accumulated
over three years and will be repaid over the next 36 months in equal payments
of 9000/36 or $250 per month.
Work
Scholarship Program
This program provides parents of students who receive Financial Aid and
a Deferred Tuition Loan, but who still need additional financial assistance,
an option to perform work at the school and receive a credit towards tuition.
This is a scholarship program where the parents are required to volunteer
their time to help with the upkeep of the school. The work scholarship amount
awarded at the beginning of the school year will be divided by 10 to determine
the number of hours to be worked during the school year. The actual scholarship
amount applied will depend upon the hours worked during the previous month.
If the number of hours worked during the year are less than that required,
the parents must pay the total balance of the tuition for the year.
A staff member will assign work to be performed, maintain a work log,
and check the quality of the work being done.
Duties that will be required may include some or all of the following:
grass mowing and trimming, gardening, grounds upkeep, small repairs and
maintenance, building cleaning (inside and out), painting, office work,
answering telephones, library work, taping TV shows, copying for teachers,
lunch room monitoring, filing, and many other things.
